This month I review David Präkel’s book, Lighting, “Lighting” is part of the series titled “Basic Photography” from AVA Books.

If you’re looking for advanced lighting techniques or lighting schema’s for various photo genre’s then this book is probably not for you. However, if you’re looking to better understand the concept of lighting and how it effects your photography; how to use it along with it’s various principles, then this is a must read book. Filled with a wealth of technical information, “Lighting” covers basic lighting theory, color theory, exposure, to various lighting situations from natural light to studio Basic Photography: Lighting, Prakelstrobes. Präkel does an excellent job in simplifying the explanations of several lighting concepts such as the inverse square law to displaying the exposure values (EV) required for low light situations.

The book is easy reading, but can be a bit “dry” at times due to the technical explanations given by Präkel. However, overall, “Lighting” is a must have book for any photographers library and highly recommended for photographers serious about learning and mastering lighting.
