Nature in Black and White

Nature in Black and White

Back in the day when I was using film to capture my images, I tended to favor black and white film over it’s color counterpart. My favorite choice for black and white was Illford FP4 or HP5 followed by Agfa APX25. Those where some great films that will be missed.

As digital came along and dominated the photography market, black and white seemed to be a mere command in Photoshop. I mean, we’ve all seen the gray scale type images created in Photoshop by converting the color image to “gray scale” that some photographers tried to pass as off as true black and white photography. The images had this kind of muted, flat gray look. Then came a long some really great plugins, like Alien Skin Exposure and NIK Color EFX that had presets to emulate some of the great black and white films manufactured. Also, Photoshop offered Black and White conversion controls to help produce more true style black and white images over the muddied gray scale versions.

Having been a fan of black and white photography, I have created a small collection of color digital images that have been converted using some of these Photoshop plugins that emulate the black and white film of my earlier years in photography.
